Your awareness of how your body is placed in space depends on your sense of proprioception that is different than your other five senses.
Proprioception exercises help you improve this internal awareness. Continuous pull of gravity, your static postures during your work and at home, your dynamic postures during motions and your repetitive motions alters you sense your body’s position in space.
Aging adds an additional element to the process that diminishes your sense of preconception.
A good example of this happens when you are learning a new exercises; you want to look at your hands and especially feet instead of feeling them. An extreme case occurs in older adults who cannot step on stairs without looking.
Their diminished sense of proprioception has created an internal disconnect.
This is a gradual process much like anything else in life. They didn’t wake up one morning and thought, “Well, I wonder where my feet are today. Let me look down and find them. Over time, lack of proprioception training has shifted the responsibility of knowing how their body is positioned in space to their eyes.
Part of fitness training at any age especially workouts for over 50 must include proprioception exercises.
