TWINSPIRITS
is the latest step in Daniele Liverani’s career, he of
Genius Rock Opera/Khymera fame. Twinspirits came together with
the purpose of creating an experience that really can break
through in the progressive music world! During his musical
trips throughout the years Daniele discovered the suitable
elements that could fit his design. Human engine Dario
Ciccioni on drums, 19 year old guitar prodigy Tommy
Ermolli, bass talent Alberto Rigoni and the raw
voice power singer Nico Søren Adamsen alongside the
virtuoso keyboard play of Liverani make an impressive package.
Opening with the instrumental “Projected” is a bold
move but it certainly gives the listener no doubt of the bands
musical pedigree right from the off. Even though this track is
relatively free of widdle it’s musically rich and will
maintain your interest. “Back To Reality” comes
starting out of the blocks and it’s a great slice of melodic
progressive metal, the band again steer clear of any excessive
musical masturbation although when Tommy Ermolli does let rip
on the solo you will find your jaw somewhere near the flaw –
this kid can play and possesses great phrasing.
“What You Want” sees the vibe head to more relaxed
waters which contrasts nicely with its predecessor before
“Take My Hand” sees another commercially viable melody
meld with accessible progressive metal. Here the guitars,
drums and bass along with a upbeat melody from Liverani on the
keyboards bring to mind the best areas of Steve Vai’s ‘Sex &
Religion’ album, there is a very strong feel to this track and
despite my name check to Vai this is something Twinspirits are
able to call their own with no other prog band delivering this
sort of thing.
“Power To Kill” is one of the fastest tracks on the
album with some intense riffing and superb drum work from
Dario Ciccioni. Nico Adamsen’s vocals are also full of meaty
aggression showing his versatility as a vocalist and its
another highlight. “Understand” sees the band getting
closest to what you might call the archetypical prog metal
sound e.g. strong riffs, soaring keyboards, drum and bass
delivering complex lines yet maintaining a solid edge
throughout. The middle instrumental breakdown segment is sure
to please the most hardened fan of Dream Theater and Tommy
Ermolli delivers another scolding solo making use of a whammy
pedal to jump across octaves. As previously stated for a 19
year old this kid shows immense skill and knows how to phrase
his lines – something lacking in many so called considered
leading players twice his age.
“Fire” is a track that again possesses a commercial
appeal within a prog metal framework, making use of spoken
word samples, the track has a lot going on yet retains his
shape with a sharp arrangement and inviting music and vocal
melodies. “Its Just Life” sees the tempo drop and it
really allows Nico to show his vocal wares to great effect,
his voice his not what you would typically expect on from a
prog band and this helps give Twinspirits another air of
individuality and is another highlight. The 12 minute epic
title track closes the album and this its another great slice
of technical prog with an assessable feel to it. The band
manage to combine many of what you would call prog metal
trademarks into the track yet manage to make it sound fresh
and maintain your interest over the course of its running
length making for a very strong closer.
To sum up ‘The Music That Will Heal The World’ is not
easy as there is a lot on offer. What is apparent even after
the first listen is that the band do have their own unique
take on the genre, have all the musical goods you could
require plus a vocalist which is likely to grab your attention
quite simply because he doesn’t sound like 99% of all other
prog metal vocalists out there. This may divide some fans of
the genre but to these ears it’s a welcome relief. Daniele
Liverani is a name that comes with high respect and I see this
as the best work he has been involved in to date. Joined by a
killer set of musicians Twinspirits have the goods to take the
prog metal world by storm and it will be interesting to see
where the music heads on their next album. Will this music
heal the world? Who knows but it will bring a fresh sound to
the progressive metal market and it’s a good one at that.
